失戀33天 (Love is Not Blind) (Video release 2012-1-10) was a box office miracle in mainland China. I’m not someone who loves romance movies since I have been consistently disappointed by Hollywood romantic comedies. However, this is the best movie about love I’ve watched in the last 15 years.
Adapted from an internet novel, it shows the 33 days after the protagonist – a wedding planner – accidentally found out her boy-friend cheated on her with her best friend. Through this it examines love and relationship in the modern Chinese society. It is really thoughtful, explores the significance of and what we should learn from break up, compares cheating to a refrigerator breaking down after the warranty period, and offers such wisdom as “Love is a luxury; LV is a necessity” (for some people).
