桃姐 (A Simple Life) (Blu-ray release 2012-6-20) is a recent Hong Kong movie that has taken many awards. It is a real story between a man and his maid who has served his family for 60 years. This movie successfully calls for society to pay attention to the needs of and take care of the elderly. With so many awards, it has proved to be a good movie, and has top-notch acting by Deanie Yip. The only question is whether this good movie is a boring one – no it is not boring at all, because there are enough things that happen with the supporting characters.
There are people who think the lead actor Andy Lau does not deserve the acting awards he got from this movie, in particular winning over Sean (Ching-Wan) Lau’s performance in 奪命金 (Life Without Principle). I disagree with such views. Surely Sean Lau did an excellent job, but Andy Lau has more realistic acting here.
