With a budget of $10 million, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is a really expensive promotional video for the video game Halo 4. It was released as a web series and can be watched on YouTube. The 90-minute extended version Blu-ray comes with the Halo 4 Limited Edition (release 2012-11-6). This review treats this as a low-budget movie, without any knowledge of the Halo series of games.
This life-action movie shows some cadets in an academy, and centers around Thomas Larsky, who is going to show up in the game. The first half of the movie is really boring as it has unacceptably slow pacing, and spent too much time on giving backgrounds of unimportant characters whose only function is to die later on. The first training session went badly and offered no excitement for the viewers. The second half of the movie, however, has the correct pacing, is quite good and generates tension effectively. The visual effects are fantastic for this budget, and are much better than many Sci-Fi TV movies.
