太極 (Tai Chi Zero, Tai Chi Hero) (Blu-ray release 2012-12-21) are two parts of a Chinese Kung Fu story.  Since they feature the model Angelababy as one of the major characters, I didn’t have much hope for these movies.  I’m surprised to find that the movies are well made with good pacing, and the Kung Fu scenes are well done.  I don’t find any major flaw in its story although there is nothing believable about it.  The most surprising thing is that it has a strong cast of … cameos.

There are post-production done to the movies such that they occasionally resemble video game screens – I don’t think it is successful or enhances the movies in anyway.  A minor weakness of the first movie is that even though it has a 1:1 mechanical monster machine that threatens the heroes’ village, its only use is to provide yet another background for Kung Fu action.  A larger weakness in the second movie is that there is absolutely no threat in the climatic battle – <SPOILER> because it is a fight between the protagonist and a guy who is obligated to helped them.
