大上海 (The Last Tycoon) (Blu-ray release 2013-3-7) is a Chinese movie with multiple first-rate actors from Hong Kong, and a Hong Kong director infamous for creating an uncountable number of trash movies – WONG Jing. This movie is possibly the best WONG Jing movie ever, despite it really looks and feels like a Chinese movie instead of a Hong Kong movie. The story is the about the protagonist’s rise to power in old Shanghai and eventually faces Japanese invasion.
I don’t think the movie is bad (at worst it might be average), but I’m a little surprised to find that all other reviews of it are unanimously bad. It turns out that people feel that this type of Japanese invasion plot is nothing new in Chinese movies (true), movies about the same character has been made before and was done better, this movie is not historically accurate, etc. I have missed the better movies before this, and have not watched too many Japanese invasion movies, so this one is okay for me. Most importantly, we get to see CHOW Yun-Fat’s impressive performance again.
