超級經理人 (The Midas Touch) is a Hong Kong comedy about two artist managers. The lead actor Chapman To already played the same role in Diva (2012), also from the same company. However, the two movies are very different. Diva toke a more serious approach but turned out to be a critical and commercial failure. The Midas Touch has nothing serious, and only attempts to make the audience laugh.
The marketing of this movie implies that secrets of the entertainment industry are exposed in this movie, but it actually offers nothing new to be learned. Right from the start we see that the story depicted in this movie is not meant to be believed – a debt collector toke over a model agency with models that have absolutely no relevant talent. Critics who expect this to be a drama with a good story are disappointed. I look at it differently. This is yet another typical Hong Kong comedy with a plot that is slightly less nonsense than the Chinese New Year comedies that are made every year by two competing companies. Since I think that a reasonable amount of jokes in this movie work, I’d declare this movie to be above average on a comparison basis.
