The Japanese movie The Great Passage (Blu-ray release 2013-11-8) is a story on a subject that sounds so boring that it is unbelievable someone made a movie out of it – creating a dictionary that is called “The Great Passage”.  Adapted from a novel, this movie shows the protagonist and his team devoting 15 years of their lives to create a new dictionary.  As boring as the subject may be, the movie is not.  It has its share of melodrama to spice things up.  Not long after the movie started I suspected the dictionary creation story might be a disguise for the romance – this turns out to be not true, the romance subplot is resolved quickly but it is really lovely.  I’m impressed by the dedication people shown in this movie.
