Wikipedia states that Space Pirate Captain Harlock – The Movie (Blu-ray release 2014-3-12) received mixed to negative reviews, but I loved it.  In this CG animated movie adaptation of the 1977 manga and the 1978 anime series, humanity has moved to space and was banned from returning to Earth by Gaia Coalition.  Captain Harlock rebels against the Coalition with his pirate ship powered by alien technology.

This movie is dark – not just the picture but the story as well, although I cannot go into that without spoiling it.  The CG is gorgeous.  As one may expect, this movie is filled with pseudo science, and therefore there are details that cannot be explained clearly, but this is very common in Japanese sci-fi animated movies.  I like the fact that several characters have a past that haunt them and influence what they do.  I love the theme of facing the truth instead of cheating oneself with illusions.  Comparatively, the live-action Space Battleship Yamato (2010) lacks the depth seen here.
