狂舞派 (The Way We Dance) (Blu-ray release 2014-3-28) is a miraculous dance movie from Hong Kong. It got critical acclaim and decent box office, despite its low budget, the use of mostly new actors and actresses and a subject that is very unusual for Hong Kong movies. While individual dance sequences may not compare to the best dance movies, this movie has several really good ideas. One of which is the fusion of Tai Chi with dance, making this movie uniquely Hong Kong – the ideal place to create a movie that merges traditional Chinese culture with modern Western culture. Another is the theme of attaining one’s goals even with disabilities, and proves it by having a one-legged man who dances as well as his peers. It clearly deserves all the praises it got.
Note: a week after this article is published, this movie got three Hong Kong Film Awards: Best New Director, Best New Performer, and Best Original Film Song.
