The Machine (Blu-ray release 2014-3-31) is a sci-fi movie about a scientist who creates a robot “The Machine” with artificial intelligence, which has consciousness and considers itself alive, in the hope of finding a way to preserve his dying daughter’s life. The Ministry of Defence turns the robot into a weapon. Although the concept is nice, the plot is not too satisfactory, and it fails to explain several things. One of which is why the Machine deliberately acts broken for a short time. The pacing is too slow. I also don’t like its production design or the annoying sound effects, but that’s subjective. Anyway, I think that on similar subjects Japanese anime did much better, e.g. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 (2008).
