等一個人咖啡 (Cafe. Waiting. Love) (Blu-ray release 2014-12-5) is a Taiwan romantic comedy based on a novel. A girl decides to work in a cafe in order to meet a handsome man who frequently goes there. Instead she befriends another man who wears a bra and other ridiculous outfit because of losing bets to somebody else.
By my standard romantic comedies rarely succeed. Typically a movie either only gets the comedies right but the love is not touching, or the romance is alright but the comedies feel lacking, or neither (as in the recent Break Up 100). Yet this movie succeeds in both aspects, although the subplots can sometimes be a little distracting. At the end there is also a fantasy element involved.
Note 1: This movie pays homage to Shaolin Soccer (2001).
Note 2: Although the story is obviously fictional, the male lead character is based on a real life person, who unfortunately died in a traffic accident several months after the novel was published.
