Somewhat similar to Kantai Collection (2015), Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio (2013) also has cute girls fused with battleships. Comparing the two TV anime, the latter has a far richer and deeper plot, is therefore much more impressive. Humanity has suffered heavy losses to mysterious and technologically superior battleships that suddenly appear. However, one of those battleship takes order from the protagonist, who is the son of a navy commander who mysteriously disappeared. There are good and bad guys in both sides, and former enemies become friends, while those mysterious battleships / cute girls begin to ponder their role of weapon, etc.
Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova DC (Blu-ray release 2015-7-3) is a movie that begins with a brief new prologue, spends roughly an hour that summarizes the 12 TV episodes, then adds an extra section that sets things up for the next movie. People who loved the TV series will have to watch this movie anyway to see how the plot continues. However, the movie itself cannot be called good. The 1-hour compilation includes impressive battles but sacrifices the introduction of various characters and how they come together, so people who have not watched the TV series will have no idea what’s going on.
