王朝的女人: 楊貴妃 (Lady of the Dynasty) (Blu-ray release 2015-11-3) is intended to be a movie about the great romance between an emperor and a woman who was previously the wife of his son, in a background of rich Chinese history. The outcome is an incoherent mess. It got universal bad reviews in China. It may be one of the worst big-budget Chinese movie releases this year.
The focus of the movie – the romance does not work, no matter how much screen time it has. It tries to do a lot of slow motion shots that attempt to be beautiful or portray the feeling of the lady, but they are just boring. The historical events have minimal explanations, and the actions of the supporting characters just look crazy without proper introductions. The movie spends a significant amount of time on an English-speaking foreign bishop that narrates some parts of the movie, but this is just a waste of time as it does not really enhance the story telling.
If there is one good thing in the movie, it’s the ending scene, although it reportedly may have been inspired by another movie which I’ve not watched.
