The Taiwan movie 我的少女時代 (Our Times) (Blu-ray release 2015-12-31) is widely regarded as the female version of 那些年,我們一起追的女孩 (You Are the Apple of My Eye) (2011).  Both are universally liked and broke box office records.  Both lead viewers to reminisce their own highschool romance.

The way I see it, the 2011 movie was basically a true story but spiced up with a lot of comedy and dramatizations.  The girlfriend character in it was supposed to be the prettiest girl in school.  This movie is basically fictional although some ideas and characters came from real life experiences of the first time director, who is a veteran in producing successful Taiwan romance idol dramas.  The protagonist is an average girl who (initially) wants to win the love of the school’s most handsome good boy basketball captain from the school’s prettiest girl.  Clearly, most female audiences can identify with the average girl in this movie much more.

The fictional nature of this story allows no limitation.  She is befriended by the school’s most handsome bad boy.  Yes, two handsome boys for the girl.  The movie is perfectly executed, with excellent pacing even if it is over two hours long, and good jokes.  After the necessary misunderstanding and setbacks in the romance, it gets a fairy tale ending.  I don’t mean this in a bad way.  If I sounded negative, no, as a man I enjoyed this movie more than the 2011 one, even if this is more commercial and calculated.
