剩者為王 (The Last Women Standing) is a romance movie adapted from a popular Chinese novel. The protagonist is 35-year old woman who is successful in her career but is still single. Her mother is anxious for her to get married as soon as possible, introduces her to a middle age doctor, but she falls for a newly hired handsome assistant of 25 years old.
I agree with most reviews of this movie in that the subject of the movie – women who cannot get married – the portrayal is not noteworthy here. This is a serious issue in Chinese society, yet its treatment in the movie is neither equally serious, comedic, nor complete. The movie is saved by the acting, especially from the father of the protagonist. He has very few scenes, but gives a memorable speech about parents’ love of their children.
