北京遇上西雅圖之不二情書 (Book of Love / Finding Mr. Right 2) (Blu-ray release 2016-8-26) is NOT a sequel to the 2013 Chinese romance movie, even though they share the same title, lead actors and the director.
The 2013 movie was hugely successful, but this new movie takes a very different approach and does not resemble the predecessor. The protagonists begin mailing each other after they both try to send the book “84 Charing Cross Road” away. At first they argue, but of course a relationship develops. The female protagonist works in a casino in Macau. This setting provides a unique background for her and the people she meets. Surprisingly the movie spends significant time on the relationship between the male protagonist and an old couple, from whom he is trying to buy their house.
The movie not only deals with romance, but has a rich story that touches on other themes as well, such as leaving the home country to live abroad, etc. However, since the relationship between the protagonists is developed via letters only, the romantic impact is quite limited. The movie tries to tackle this restriction by having them talk to an imaginary version of their pen pal, but this does not help too much. Even though this is not the best romance movie I’ve watched, this is an excellent drama considering everything.
