I Am Mother (Netflix) is a sci-fi movie that starts with a robot mother raising a human girl and calling her daughter, after human extinction. The girl grows up. One day a wounded woman comes in and says the robots are evil. The mother, however, attempts to save her and points out the lies she says. The protagonist needs to decide who to trust.
The brilliance of this movie is that it is original, has enough things happening throughout the movie, keeps the audience guessing who the bad guy is and who should be trusted, and ends the story with several twists. The answer is not simple, however. It goes beyond the trope that robots simply want to wipe out humanity as in Terminator.
SPOILER – I Am Mother Explained
Plan of Mother – The AI that controls the mother and the droids wiped out humanity, in order to raise the perfect human that meets its ethical standard.
Wounded Woman – Is likely the first child raised by the Mother but is seen as a failure due to her selfishness. The AI keeps her alive to be a test of tempting the protagonist to choose her own survival over her brother’s. Instead the protagonist goes back for her brother – this selflessness passes the ultimate test.
Shooting of Mother – is merely a symbol for empowering the protagonist to be the new mother to take care of the brother and all the embryos. The AI can always have the droids outside break in to take control back easily if it wants to.
Origami dog – is a symbol of humanity being pets controlled by AI.
